Precision Grinding: How Centreless & Cylindrical Grinding Achieve Micron-Level Accuracy

Many automotive components, such as pins, shafts, spacers and rings, need dimensions and surface finishes that machining alone cannot achieve, especially after heat treatment. Precision grinding is the process that brings these parts to their final size, roundness and finish.

Why Grinding After Heat Treatment?

Heat treatment improves hardness and strength, but it can cause small distortions and leaves a hardened surface that is difficult to cut. Grinding removes a small, controlled amount of material using an abrasive wheel, correcting size and geometry while producing a fine surface finish.

Centreless Grinding

In centreless grinding, the workpiece is supported on a work rest blade between a grinding wheel and a regulating wheel, without being held between centres. It is ideal for high-volume production of pins and round parts, offering:

  • Fast cycle times for large batches.
  • Excellent consistency in diameter and roundness.
  • Suitability for long, slender components.

Cylindrical Grinding

Cylindrical grinding holds the component between centres or in a chuck. It is used for shafts and parts with multiple diameters, shoulders or tapers. CNC cylindrical grinders allow complex profiles to be ground accurately in a single setup.

Bore and Face Grinding

Rings, spacers and bushes often need accurate internal diameters and parallel faces. Bore grinding finishes the inside diameter, while duplex face grinding grinds both faces of a part at the same time, ensuring flatness, parallelism and thickness control.

What Grinding Delivers

  • Tight dimensional tolerances.
  • Improved roundness, flatness and parallelism.
  • Smooth surface finish for better wear life and fit.
  • Consistent quality across production batches.
